Can I prepare my own individual tax return?

I often get asked this question and as preparing tax returns is my business, it is hard to remain unbiased.

From my perspective yes everyone can prepare there own tax return. With mygov now prefilling your end of year information, lodging your tax return is now easier than ever.

However that said I would still recommend using accountant.

Why?

Because most people find tax tedious and boring and want to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.

This could mean not taking the time to look for all your receipts, not thinking through the events of the past year and not realising what you are able to claim.

This is where an accountant will take the time and ask all the right questions.

Ultimately that could mean a big difference for your refund.
